Returning to a previously held position
After speaking with Amanda Fritz we are considering working with her to get Public Financing of Elections on the ballot in 2014 instead of 2012. To this end she would be willing as a sitting councilwoman to attend one of our public member meetings to speak about this.
The 2010 Voter Owned Elections (VOE) campaign lead by support from Common Cause had decided to not use Amanda Fritz because she was the success story. Luckily The Portland Green Party has different logic and will make full use of Fritz in our effort to return VOE to Portland with the new more descriptive name "Public Financing of Elections". Next time it is on the ballot, the campaign's name and the ballot name will match.
Gathering the tens of thousands of signatures to get VOE back on the ballot has been a herculean task. To date we have gathered thousands, which is fantastic, but it is not tens of thousands. We haven't quite reached the critical mass we need. This is the prefect time to reevaluate. 2014 is two whole more years without candidates of the people, but a failed 2012 attempt could delay the return even longer.
We will discuss this more during our open work meetings at People's Coop, last Wednesday of every month.
